LSMSA Summer Programs
Earth Exploration: Are you fascinated by the world around you? Learn more about how Earth works, from the mechanism of plate tectonics, to the processes behind Earth’s climate, the dynamics of our atmosphere, the unseen deep worlds hidden in our oceans, and the fascinating spectacles taking place in outer space!
Everyday Physics: From a classroom-sized camera to rainbows and soap bubbles, you will learn about color addition, the flow of energy in humans and other animals and in homes, geysers, cars, factories, cities, civilization, planets and in the universe. You will learn about the sounds of echoes, nature, music and speech. You will see demonstrations of electric levitation, magnetic levitation, electrostatics and the simple electrical generator that is behind our electrical civilization. You will also learn about the radiation that enables cancer treatment, pasteurization, smoke detectors, supplies powers for pace makers and spaceships and warms the interior of the Earth. Offered Week 1 and Week 2
Exploring the Human Body: Come along as we take a tour through the structures and functions of the human body.  We will explore skin, bones, muscles, blood and other components of the body. Be ready to learn about the fascinating, wonderful things your body does on a daily basis! We will complete our tour with the brain, which manages the rest of the body.
Geology for Enthusiasts: Geology is the study of Earth’s inner layers and crust, their composition, governing processes and history. Where does oil and gas come from? What causes landslides and earthquakes? What did our planet look like when dinosaurs roamed and ruled? In this course, you will learn hands-on the basics of geology and its principles – from minerals, rocks and fossils to the mechanisms behind volcanic eruptions, plate tectonics and how our Earth formed.
Plants and Society: In this course, we will explore the interactions of humans with plants. We will examine growing plants on campus, study plant structures and functions and discover the role of plants in the environment. Robotics: Explore the multidisciplinary field of robotics and learn about the roles robots play in everyday life. In this course you will have an opportunity to build and program robots while expanding your knowledge of circuitry and engineering.
