ExxonMobil

  • National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI): ExxonMobil became a founding sponsor of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) in 2007 with a $125 million commitment to the non-profit organization. NMSI provides scalable, rigorous and cost-effective program solutions that empower school communities to prepare all students to succeed in college and the workforce.

  • NMSI College Readiness Program: Student achievement, particularly in math and science, is crucial to our country’s capacity for innovation and future economic growth, yet a growing number of today’s students lack foundational knowledge and skills in these subjects. NMSI’s College Readiness Program is addressing this critical gap by partnering with schools to increase the number.

  • Laying the Foundation: In addition to the College Readiness Program and UTeach, NMSI delivers a high-quality, teacher-to-teacher training program that has already trained nearly 50,000 teachers. The training focuses on creating excellent math, science and English instruction with an emphasis on research-based teaching strategies and best practices.

  • Focus on Military Families: The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) launched the Initiative for Military Families (IMF) in 2010 to ensure that students from military families have access to highquality, collegelevel math and science instruction wherever their families are based.

  • UTeach: The U.S. is failing to produce and retain sufficient numbers of qualified math and science teachers, which impacts the success and future of our students and the ability of our country to remain competitive in today’s global marketplace. In response to this growing crisis, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) began replicating a highly successful teacher training program, UTeach, in 2008. The program, which recruits and trains math and science majors for careers in teaching, is transforming the way universities prepare teachers for the 21st century.

  • Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp: Dr. Bernard Harris and the ExxonMobil Foundation have partnered together since 2006 to provide math and science camps to underserved students across the country in an effort to close the learning gap and encourage youth to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

  • ExxonMobil Teachers Academy: Today, in fields like medicine, computing and energy, the U.S. needs more brilliant young minds than ever before. Yet, as the need for brainpower grows, the number of our nation’s young people pursuing careers in these areas is decreasing. Fortunately, we believe this trend can be reversed, which is why we provide the ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. This summer, nearly 200 third- through fifth-grade teachers will attend the ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. The Academy offers a five-day program in Houston, Texas designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. Two of the leading teacher-training organizations in the U.S., Math Solutions Professional Development, founded by Marilyn Burns, and The National Science Teachers Association, design the curriculum, provide instructors and manage the daily activities and logistics of the Academy. Since 2005, more than 5,400 educators from around the country have attended an Academy impacting more than 400,000 students.

  • Introduce a girl to engineering: ExxonMobil annually hosts “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” events at company sites across the country with activities designed to encourage students to pursue careers in engineering. The program seeks to promote curiosity among middle school students, and particularly help shrink the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and related fields. For more than a decade, hundreds of company employees have helped demonstrate to more than 12,000 students that engineering careers are not only exciting, rewarding and diverse, but also offer the power to make a difference in society.
  • Junior Achievement: Over 1,700 of our employees volunteered with JA chapters in ten U.S. cities in 2015. Internationally, ExxonMobil employees volunteered with chapters in 18 additional countries. We contributed approximately $1 million to JA initiatives worldwide. In March 2016 ExxonMobil was recognized with the Junior Achievement Gold Presidential Award for contributing more than 19,500 volunteer hours in the previous year. Additionally, fifteen ExxonMobil employees serve on local and regional JA boards of directors.
